on sunday, i sat a few metres from one of my artistic heroines, FLOX, and observed her at her craft, live.
and no, i didn't say hi. i have an irrational fear of "famous" people.
once, when i was at high school, i went into town after school (my school was in the downtown area of the city) and found myself face-to-face to two very famous All Blacks. right in front of me! crossing the street towards me!
so there i was...with my irrational fear...i couldn't ignore them, or pretend i didn't know who they were (everyone knew who they were!*) so i was forced to face my fear and *gasp* say something...!
(should i tell you what i said? or should i leave it hanging?
it is
ok, here's what came out of my mouth: hello, famous people.
I KNOW!!! they looked at me liked i'd been smoking something i shouldn't have been behind the pool changing rooms during recess, too!
it was at that moment i vowed to never try to conquer my fear again.
instead i am happy to sit a few metres away in complete, anonymous comfort.
xo
*those were in the days when the All Blacks team changed every decade, not every game.

Actual laughed out loud, kids are asking me what's so funny!!!

Who were they?!
He he, oh dear! I want to know who they were too!
ReplyDeleteI actually hugged Sean Fitzpatrick in greeting when he crossed a street toward me in Auckland. His face looked so familiar and when he smiled at me I assumed I knew him. It wasn't until a few seconds after the hug when his face was inches from mine looking bewildered that I realised who he was. I only WISH i had said "hello famous man" instead"
ReplyDeleteHaha, too funny. I love the comment from Days of our lives. Seriously, imagine what they must hear or see from star struck people.
ReplyDeleteI had Sean Hoppe (former NZ league player) buy me a drink once and sit down with my friend and I at a bar. She was opening and shutting her mouth like a fish...afterwards she said, how did you talk to him so normally.
Oh wow - her work is so amazing!!! I know how you feel - I'm usually way too shy to say hi in public to famous people.
ReplyDeleteHahaha!!! The cafe I used to work at down the mount (sidetrack) quite frequently hosts famous people and the NZ sevens team. I ALWAYS used to hide out back because I knew my voice would break at the most inappropriate moment and when I'm nervous I giggle.... A LOT. Oh dear.

ReplyDeletethis is the cutest reaction, I have ever heard of. actually, I believe they've thought so too. embrace it, there's nothing embarrassing about it. besides, FLOX's piece is so impressive. I love it!
ReplyDeleteWow!! I love FLOX, I have one of her paintings in the lounge, on a gigantic piece of cherry wood...I think it's my favourite inanimate object <3
ReplyDeleteAnd ha ha ha ha...I absolutely would have ended up saying that to the rugby players. Totally. he he.
ReplyDeleteI <3 Flox!! I have a few prints of hers from her collaboration with Fly My Pretties. LOVE!
ReplyDeleteHilarious! My dad would have happily traded places with you to embarrass himself in front of his heros. I love the artwork you've captured!
ReplyDeleteHilarious how you describe the encounters with 'famous' people! After all, they are only just human right, they poo and wee just like you and me:) hahaha...no need to be intimidated. This lady has talent, talented like you just in a different medium. I love her work too, love the kiwiana feel...I used to show her work to my highschool Art classes, a real hit!
ReplyDeleteYep, pretty much starstruck anytime I meet or see someone famous...so silly really as they are just normal people like you and me. I served Cliff Richard potatoes once and I was so nervous I nearly dropped them in his lap!
ReplyDeletewe had this conversation at work once - what famous people you've met etc... then my mate says 'michael jackson'. no one believed her.... then she brought in a photo. NOW THAT'S FAMOUS!!!! and lol. great post. I've met flox briefly, she wouldn't remember... sigh.
